That Twitchy Eye

                                  

 Most people would have experienced a sudden onset of a twitchy eye which sometimes strikes at the worst possible time, speaking to your boss or worse, on a first date. Twitching of the eyes can be rather irritating and sometimes it just doesn’t stop when you need it to. There are more severe forms of eye twitches called blepharospasm. Blepharospasm is suspected to be caused by nerve disease. But let’s look at what causes the spontaneous twitching that frustrates us from time to time.

1)      Stress – Twitching can occur when someone is under immense stress and the body starts to react to the stress. It is usually short-lived and not all bodies react to stress the same way. Find a suitable way to deal with stress. Maybe a yoga session, martial arts class or simply meditating for a couple of minutes can bring that stress level down.
 
2)      Fatigue – There may be times when pulling an all-nighter was the only way to meet a deadline or mug for an upcoming examination. But when the body is really tired, twitches can occur. It’s a sign to call it a night and get a much deserved rest.

3)      Eye Strain – Rushing to meet numerous deadlines while being glued to the computer screen for hours can also cause the sudden onset of twitching. Remember to give your eyes adequate rest while working long hours on the computer. The golden rule is to look away into the distance for 20 seconds after every 20 minutes on the computer.

4)      Caffeine – Caffeine is a stimulant. For some, the stimulation caused by caffeine can have various uncomfortable outcomes like heart palpitations, jitters and panic attacks. It can also cause twitching of the eyes. If you have all of the afore mentioned symptoms, then it may be a good idea to avoid caffeine products.

5)      Alcohol – Excessive alcohol consumption has been known to cause the onset of twitching. Drinking in moderate not only helps to keep the twitching away, but helps to avoid other alcohol related diseases.

6)      Lack of proper nutrition – Lack of essential vitamins and minerals has been suspected of causing the sudden onset of twitching. Eating a well-balanced diet which consists of lots of greens and fruits can most definitely help to keep the twitch away.

Ultimately, there is nothing to worry about when you have the occasional twitching. All you have to do is to eat healthy, get lot of rest and be happy. However, on a cautionary note, if you experience twitching with slanting of your eyes or lips, seek professional help immediately.
